Family Time

My weekend sort of started on Thursday evening. Molly and I went out for dinner and drinks with a few girls that recently graduated and were moving away to start their big girl jobs. We did drinks at Pint House and dinner at Bakersfield, both in the Short North. Molly and I were STARVING so we actually got dinner at Pint House. They have really good roast beef nachos! Then we just got margaritas at Bakersfield, also delicious despite being available in lime and on the rocks.

Yum!
Friday was a normal work day. I was planning to go to the State Track Meet that afternoon, but my Piketon people didn't compete at that time so instead I headed to my parents just a little early and spent time with my nephew.

Mandatory road trip sweet tea.
Saturday afternoon my cousin Taylor got married. Her grandma and my grandma are sisters, so we're technically like 3rd cousins or something like that. Anyway, her wedding was at the Chillicothe Country Club. It was very nice and simple. Their kids were adorable beyond description and we had a great time at dinner, dancing and singing karaoke. I didn't sing, but some family members did and they were surprisingly decent.
Mother of the Bride being escorted by Jon.

Colt and Bugsy (her nickname)

Taylor walking down the aisle with her dad.

Saying their vows, which were handwritten and adorable.

First dance as husband and wife.

Joey and Bugsy did a daddy/daughter dance to "Let It Go". So precious. I cried.

Colt did a little break dancing too.

Sisters - Sharon, Janet, Katherine, Bonnie and Ann.

Cousins - Brenda, my mom, Sheridan, Marsha, Allison, Vicky, Jennifer

Sisters

Great Grandchildren - Me, Molly, Ian, Jon, Hailey, Lindsay, and Taylor (holding baby Grayson)

A little patio break - Allison, Marsha, Vicky, me, Molly, Mom
Sunday we celebrated Father's Day at my grandparents, but I didn't take any pictures. :( We also helped Tyler pack, because he leaves tonight!!! for Brazil for the World Cup.

Quick Trip to DC

A few years back my sister and her family moved from Chicago to a city close to Washington DC. I had been there to visit them once back in January, but the rest of my family hadn't been there.

My dad, Molly and myself took a little roadtrip this past weekend to see the girls, celebrate Charley's upcoming 3rd birthday and see some of the sites in DC. Molly had never been to DC and three  years ago (before I even know I'd have family moving there) I put "take Molly to Washington DC" on  my bucket list.

We left really early on Friday and despite Dad saying we would share the driving, he ended up driving all the way there and all the way back. We asked and asked if he needed a break and at one point he told me if I asked again I'd be walking back to Columbus. Ok pops, I will go back to sleep! :)

Friday afternoon and evening we spent playing outside and going for walks around the lake that is behind their house. We picked flowers, watched turtles, played with sticks in algea off the dock, and even saw some of the biggest snakes I've ever seen in real life basking on the rocks along the edge of the pond. They were gross and huge and I have the heebie geebies thinking about them right now.

Friday evening we had a movie night complete with popcorn. We watched Madagascar 3 (I haven't seen 1 and 2!) and may have nodded off for part of it. Whoops! Emery and Charley slept together in Char's bed and Molly and I got Em's princess room for the weekend.

Saturday morning, we got up early and ready to head downtown. We walked the Mall, rode the carousel, saw the Capital Building, Washington Monument, Reflecting Pool, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the White House. We walked by Fords Theatre and the Peterson House (where President Lincoln died).

It was a full day, but I'd love to go back with her another time and do a tour so we can hear the history behind things and go to Arlington. I think she'd love that.

With Emery at the capital.

With Molly we took lots of selfies.

selfie at the Washington Monument.

with president lincoln.

reflecting pond selfie.

lincoln memorial selfie.

white house snapchat.
We did take pictures besides selfies. They're just all on my Canon and I haven't uploaded those pictures yet.

On the way back to the house from DC, we hit some traffic. I get motion sickness really easy, and even though I had taken my medicine, this time was no different. We ended up pulled along the median of the highway and I was propping myself up against the concrete divider sicker than a dog. This also happened last time I visited DC, but this time was not nearly as embarrassing, even though there were cars passing and honking their horns. Ugh.

Saturday evening we had pizza, Charley got to open her birthday presents and played outside for a little bit. We got up early on Sunday to head back to Ohio after breakfast. It was a great trip and the girls are so funny. Charley sings and talks and dances. She would perform for us and then bow and say "sank you, sank you, sank you". She's a hoot. I can't wait to go back and see them during my visit on the 4th of July!

Mandatory departure photo.
The drive home was quite boring. But Molly spiced it up by sending enhanced snapchats. And I had to join of course. Below are a few of our masterpieces.

What started it all.

Then I joined.

Then Ty got in on the action.

Never a dull day.

101 in 1001: the final update

1,001 days ago I made a list of things I wanted to do, accomplish, and experience. This was part of the 101 Things in 1001 Days challenge that I had done once before and did for a second time. Today is the final day of that challenge, so I'm here to do an update on the things I did get done and what I didn't get done and why.

It's so hard to believe that 1001 days have passed since I made that list. So many things have changed since then. When I made the list I was in an awkward place in life - newly single, so confused about what path my life was taking since it wasn't turning out like I had planned. Oh life plans! They don't turn out like how you think they should, they turn out like how they're supposed to be! So there are a lot of things that were put on that list back then that aren't even things I'm interested in doing - either not at this time or, in some cases, ever!

I do plan to make another list - because it's fun to have a list of goals and things to do and to see how my priorities, likes/dislikes, and interests change over the years!

start date: Wednesday, September 7, 2011
end date: Wednesday, June 4, 2014

  • make home made ice cream - i made this for a 'welcome back' event for work. it was a disaster and i haven't made it since!
  • try 30 new recipes from my 'yum' Pinterest board (garlic cheese bread stickscrock pot potato soupmint chocolate chip cookiescake batter dip, chocolate chip cookie dough dip, pull apart cheese bread, meatball casserole) - i have not been the best at cooking over the past few years. i know i did a few more than this, but i didn't write them down.
  • grow a vegetable garden - i didn't do this. i even purchased seeds this year, but didn't plan them. i need a bigger yard or deck than what i have now, which is none!
  • learn how to 'can' (or just 'can' since i guess it isn't really that hard?) - didn't do this either. i really want to do this with Mam, so i think i will plan to take a day off work and go home this summer and help her out.
  • freeze corn - didn't do this, so i will have to make it a goal this year.
  • clean out closets and purge (or yard sale) anything I haven't worn in years - i did this part way. i have cleaned out a lot of my closets, including just this week, and put a lot of clothes in to trash bags. BUT that's as far as it's gotten. i need to actually get them from my apartment to a yard sale, consignment shop, or donation center.
  • build something from the Knock Off Wood website - i didn't do any of this. i actually don't even read her blog anymore. when she just posted plans for cute pottery barn furniture, i was all about it.
  • make Christmas stockings for my family - i found cute stockings a few years ago that i love and have been using for me and Bow, so no need to make any others right now.
  • make matching tree skirt for the stockings - i would like a new tree skirt, but didn't do this either.
  • get a new lens for my camera - didn't do it. i don't even know what kind to buy, so when i do use my camera, i just use the kit lens. (the horror, i know!)
  • get a pair of riding boots to wear during the fall and winter - what did i wear during the winter before i owned riding boots? the ones i had were awesome and lasted me two seasons. time to get knew ones this fall!
  • get a pair of Sperry's - what shoes did i wear in the spring, fall, winter, summer before i owned sperry's? same with Tom's! love them.
  • buy a house to remodel - i still look at houses every single night, but can't afford anything in the grandview area. i have my eye on some properties in piketon. i would love to fix something up and rent it out.
  • go to the New England coast - didn't do, but have hopes for a road trip sometime.
  • go to the west coast - didn't do but still want to.
  • fly somewhere (Tampa, Chicago, Miami, Washington DC) - i am in love with flying. i could do it every day i think. i made four trips (all between February '13-January '14 to four destination cities, 9 cities and 8 new airports. people hate on o'hare, but i loved walking around during my layover there (granted, it wasn't delayed!)
  • visit NYC - Molly and I went on a spur of them moment trip there for spring break 2012. we were in the city limited for all of 28 hours and saw as much as we could see. i want to go back.
  • visit at least 2 Big Ten football stadiums I've never been to (I saw Penn State's Beaver Stadium, so that counts; NorthwesternMichigan) - i love sports and sports stadiums. i will always try to drive by them, no matter the city, sport or level.
  • go on a cruise - jill, amy and i went to the bahamas. just a 3 day cruise, but i definitely want to do another. so much fun!
  • visit another country - the bahamas! as part of the above cruise.
  • take Molly to Washington DC - this just barely made it, but Molly got to visit DC for the first time on May 31, 2014!
  • go to Nashville - didn't make it there, but hoping to make it there this summer.
  • go to Las Vegas - didn't go and it's not one of my top destinations to travel to anymore.
  • go to Charleston, SC - Molly and I visited here over spring break, complete with a carriage tour.
  • take a cross country road trip  Molly and I took a road trip to Florida. We slept in 5 cities and saw so much stuff in 9 different states (Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia). Already thinking of directions to go next year!
  • visit Mt. Rushmore - didn't make it there, but still want to! maybe on a road trip out west next spring break?
  • visit 5 new states - i made it to 4 states for the first time, New  York, New Jersey, Michigan, and Arkansas
  • go skiing - had 'plans' to go a few different times, but either because of too warm of weather or just something, it never happened.
  • stop talking about other people/gossiping - this is one that i've tried really hard at, but sometimes fail and have a gossip session. ugh. i've really tried to remember the quote by eleanor roosevelt "great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people" when having conversations with others. so while i haven't completely stopped, i am much more aware of the awful habit i had.
  • go to church more often and work on my relationship with God - in March of 2012 i started attending a bible study and have continued to go every monday since then. i've missed a couple, but it's always my top priority on monday nights. i don't go to church every sunday, because i still haven't found a church in columbus that i love, but i got way more often than i did when i first made this list - at least once a month.
  • pray every day before bed and in the morning - i've gotten a lot better about this, but there is still room for improvement.
  • write a letter to my 30-year-old self and keep it - sadly i never did this. i guess i still have time since i don't turn 30 for another 10 months! eek....that's so close!
  • make a list of 1000 things I'm thankful for/write down five things every day that I'm thankful for - i started doing this, but then quit. but i am thankful for a lot!
  • join the Dogwood Festival Committee - i joined the committee for the 2012 festival, but with piketon being more than an hour away and me getting more involved with activities and organizations in Columbus, it just wasn't possible. i still want to help when i can and plan to be more involved in the future than i was this year.
  • take a spin class at my gym -went with Abra on 9/20/11, i need to go to another one now that i'm a member of the gym again.
  • run in a 5K w/o stopping - when i started this list i had only ever ran one 5K and it was an embarrassment. i've done quite a few since then and even two half marathons!
  • do the 200 sit-up program - i laugh at this one, because the thought of doing 200 situps then was so hard. i did 200 last night just on my own for my daily workout. oh how things change!
  • learn how to play the piano - i sadly never took piano lessons, but still want to learn how to do this one day.
  • read 15 books - i read quite a few books and some of them did not make it on to this list because i forgot to write down the titles or because they were 'self-help' type books and i don't want you to all know my struggles! ha. but the ones i did get done: My Secret Affair by Mimi Alford, Through My Eyes by Tim Tebow, Off Balance by Dominique Muceano; Then Came You by Jennifer Weiner; Ladies' Nights by Mary Kay Andrews; Happily Ever After by Trista Sutter...in progressThe Shoemaker's Wife by Adriana Trigiani; Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn; When Girlfriends Make Choices by Savannah Page; Mad About You by Kate Perry....in progress; Lucia, Lucia by Adriana Trigiani)
  • finish my high school scrapbook - i don't think i've scrapbooked since i started this challenge.
  • finish my college scrapbook - see above. even though i haven't scrapbooked, i was really good about printing all my pictures from 2011 and 2012 and putting them in photo albums.
  • donate blood - i did this! TWICE! the first time i got a little light headed and nauseaous, which was always my fear, but the second time they just laid me down from the beginning and i was fine! i also registered to be a marrow donor if needed.
  • donate my hair to Locks of Love - i didn't do this. i was so close to have long enough hair and i should have just done it. :(
  • volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House - i didn't do this.
  • donate the box of stuff in my closet to RMH - the box is still in my closet!
  • donate 10% to my church - i always tithe every time i go to church, but i know i'm not in the 10% range. must get better at this.
  • send a care package to a soldier - unfortunately, i didn't do this either.
  • do 29 good deeds on my next birthday  - didn't do this either.

  • write a letter to myself to open in 10 years - i didn't do this.
  • learn how to actually use my camera  - i started taking a photography class at OSU, but i couldn't finish because of class conflicts. maybe i'll try again this year.
  • participate in "NOfacebook NOvember" and "No Facebook February" each year - breaks from facebook are needed and after being gone for a while, you realize how much time you waste on there!
  • make my hair my natural color again - it's been the natural color since June 2012. i did get highlights last summer and hated them. wanting to try something new this summer, just don't know what.

  • move out of Columbus and closer to home - this was one of my top priorities in 2011 and something i don't want to do anymore. i like living in Columbus and my neighborhood and i have so many friends here. one day i might move - it might be closer to piketon, it might be further away, who knows what the future holds for me.

Memorial Day Weekend

The weekend started off with Columbus' Crawl for Cancer. For years now, my friends have participated and this year I joined up with them. The entry fee goes to charities in the area who support cancer research. Your team of 10 people is given a schedule of bars to visit throughout the day and at each place you get a few pitchers of beer to enjoy. I loathe the taste of beer, so I just went along for the fun, GREAT people watching, and to hang out with my awesome friends. I also spent the majority of the day sitting in the sun working on my tan, so it all worked out great. (Don't worry, I was covered in sunscreen and was equally as pale when I left as I was when I got there!)

The girls on my team.

Love these two girls.

Chealsi and a few other girls from Juan Pablo's season of the Bachelorette were also on the same bar schedule as me, but I did not talk to them or ask them for a picture! Even if I wanted to just a little bit!!

Sunday we spent the day at Mam and Papaw's and had our first cookout of the season. We spent the entire day outside. If you were cold, you moved to the sun. If you got too hot, you moved to the shade. I sat in the sun most of the day and got really sunburned. I even had on some good sunblock!

Tyler and I also went on a snapping turtle expedition. We did a little trap and release. I can't believe he walked right out into the middle of the pond and dug it up. I can very much be an outdoorsy girl, but walking into a pond of algea and mud and muck is not one of those things I'd jump at the chance to do. Tyler, on the other hand doesn't care. I love that even though he's an adult, he still has the same interests as he did when he was 6 years old and had a collection of insects and frogs in containers on our back porch.

I was not expecting him to just walk out into the pond!

The little turtle.

Releasing him in the nearby creek so the little guy can be free. And not eat our fish!

Monday started off with the annual cemetery trip. We do this every year with Dad. We started with Rushtown Cemetery to visit the graves of my Grandma and Grandpa Wickham. This is usually the first and the one where the most tears are shed. My dad is such a softy and he always cries. And I'm just like him, so I cry because 1. it's sad to be in a cemetery, 2. I didn't really get to know my grandparents because they passed when I was 2 and 4, 3. Molly and Tyler don't remember them at all, and 4. these are my dad's parents who he hasn't had in his life for more than 25 years and I don't ever want to have 25 years of my life without my Mom and Dad.This is the same cemetery where my Grandpa's twin brother and parents are buried, so we got to see all of the Wickham family that day.

Then we traveled on to Mt. Lathem Cemetery, which is where my Mam's family is. This one is probably the hardest for me because Grandma Primer is buried here and she's been the only family member I've had pass away. It is so hard to think that she's been gone almost 4 years. I used to send her letters in the mail all of the time and it just doesn't seem like it's been that long since I've sent her an update on my life. All of Grandma's family is buried at this cemetery - her parents, her twin sister, her brother and younger sister, a few son-in-laws. The view from this cemetery is really pretty. It sits on a hill and you just see land for miles and miles. EXCEPT on the side where 90% of my family is buried and then you overlook a bunch of trashy trailers. We were all trying to have a nice moment at the grave and there were no less than 13 dogs chasing chickens in the yard across the road. I'm not even kidding. The dogs just kept running out of the house. It was like a clown car, they just kept coming. And this woman is chasing the dogs (who are chasing chickens) yelling at them to stop. #icanteven

After we left Buchanan, we went to the Waverly cemetery to the grave of Papaw's parents. They both died long before I was born, so I didn't know them at all. My great-grandparents on my grandpa's side were the same age as my great-great-grandparents on Mam's side. The difference of being the oldest and youngest child in a family. So strange to think Papaw's mother and father were born in the 1800's!!! We also visited Uncle Bob's grave, who just passed away last August. He was my grandpa's brother that lived just down the street from us in Piketon. And Dad finally found the grave of a friend of his that he's been looking for 20 years.

Monday afternoon Molly and I went to Long's Retreat and went canoeing. We hadn't been for a long time, so it was fun. We just paddled around the lake/creek like thing it turns into and talked. We got ice cream for the ride home. Tyler had grilled a whole chicken and vegies, so dinner was waiting for us when we got home. It was a good day.

(pictures to come when Molly uploads them)

Later Monday night Dad and I went to Mound Cemetery, which is the one in our town. We visited Erin's grandma and grandpa, along with a lot of people from our town that I knew. Dad's cousin Howard is buried there as well. And Dad also showed me the graves of two friends of his that died in 1971 in a car accident. He was supposed to be with them, but didn't go. I'm so thankful that he wasn't with them and can't even imagine the pain of losing two close friends at age 21.

I used to think that visiting cemeteries was creepy and sad, and while it is very sad to be visiting the grave of a loved one, I enjoy going so much because it's a great time to remember wonderful people and the great memories you have of them. And I especially like hearing my dad talk and tell stories about people he knew and my family members. It's a history lesson as well.

It was a great holiday weekend! Definitely thankful for the men and women in my life who served for our country - my two grandpa's and a few uncles - who allow me to have great times like these with my family.
